Red Wines

Hungary’s reds are built on freshness and spice rather than simple fruit. The cooler northern region of Eger is home to Egri Bikavér, a savoury, pepper‑laced blend anchored by Kékfrankos and often including Kadarka, Syrah and Bordeaux varieties. Legends say it fuelled soldiers during the 1552 siege; today it’s refined and balanced, offering sour cherry, black pepper and earthy spice with fine tannins. Its white twin, Egri Csillag, is equally elegant, but here we celebrate the red.

Further south in Villány, warmer weather ripens Cabernet Franc to velvety concentration. Top bottles carry the protected appellation Villányi Franc and show black cherry, graphite, cocoa and dried herbs. These wines marry Bordeaux structure with a touch of Mediterranean warmth, and benchmark producers like Gere Attila prove Cabernet Franc’s true home may be in Hungary.

We also highlight monovarietal Kékfrankos, Hungary’s signature red grape known for bright cranberry and cherry fruit, white pepper spice and racy acidity. Versions from Sopron, Eger and Szekszárd show regional nuance. Fans of Pinot Noir or Barbera will appreciate its moderate alcohol and food‑friendly style.

Whether you crave a structured blend, a spicy monovarietal or a plush Bordeaux‑like wine with a Hungarian soul, this collection showcases the diversity of the country’s red wines.
