Kreinbacher Wines
In 2002, entrepreneur József Kreinbacher planted his first vines on the rocky slopes of Somló, Hungary’s smallest but most dramatic wine region. His vision was clear: craft bottle‑fermented sparkling wines and still whites that honour the basalt volcano beneath them. Today Kreinbacher farms 60 hectares of organically certified vines, with additional grapes sourced from local growers, and cultivates the region’s native varieties – Juhfark, Furmint, Olaszrizling and Hárslevelű – alongside Syrah and Chardonnay.
Somló is a monadnock of black basalt that imparts piercing acidity, smoky salinity and remarkable ageing potential to its wines. Kreinbacher captures these qualities in his Juhfark and Furmint, which combine citrus, quince and mineral drive with textural richness. His sparkling wines, first released in 2014, spend extended time on lees, building complexity and fine mousse. The basalt‑inspired cellar complex, completed in 2011, echoes the mountain’s geology and houses state‑of‑the‑art presses and maturation tunnels.
This collection celebrates Kreinbacher’s singular focus on Somló’s terroir, offering wines that rival Champagne for elegance while remaining unmistakably volcanic. Pair them with seafood, sushi or salty cheeses to appreciate their briny precision.
