Eger Wines
Eger, a historic wine town in northern Hungary, lies in the foothills of the Bükk Mountains. Here, vineyards grow on a complex mix of brown forest clay, limestone and rhyolite tuff, with some parcels carved directly into the volcanic bedrock. This dual geology – volcanic base under sedimentary topsoil – gives Eger wines their unique combination of fresh fruit and ferrous minerality.
The region’s signature red blend is Egri Bikavér (“Bull’s Blood”), a savoury, pepper‑laced cuvée led by Kékfrankos and supported by varieties such as Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cabernet. Despite its fearsome name, modern Egri Bikavér is refined: expect sour cherry and plum, black pepper, earthy spice and cool stony undertones wrapped in fine tannins and vibrant acidity.
Its white counterpart, Egri Csillag (“Star of Eger”), blends native grapes like Leányka, Hárslevelű, Furmint and Olaszrizling. Crafted in a bright, zesty style, it delivers citrus, orchard fruit, delicate florals and a flinty precision that betrays its volcanic roots.
Eger’s cool continental climate ensures tension and balance in both red and white wines. This collection highlights the region’s breadth: from accessible Egri Bikavér to single‑cru expressions like St Andrea Áldás and Boldogságos, where brown clay over rhyolite tuff yields generous berry fruit, sweet spice and a savoury mineral finish. Discover why these Bull’s Blood and Stars of Eger wines are beloved for their food‑friendly nature and value.
